Halloween!!!

The day started early, getting Layla ready to go to preschool in her Carmen Miranda/Flamenco dancer costume. She was very excited. After school we came home, ate dinner, and Greg and I decided to join in the fun. Neither one of us have dressed up for Halloween in over 10 years, but we searched through boxes in our storage room and came up with some costumes. Greg went as Dr Timothy Leary and I went as a witch. Layla was so happy to see us dress up with her.

So now we're all ready so off we go trick-or-treating. Our house is in the rural part of Oliver and there are no other children in our neighbourhood. The neighbours said last year they didn't get one single trick or treater so we decided no one needed to stay home to give out candy.

At the suggestion of one of the mom's at preschool, we went to a seniors community of manufactured homes. She was right, it seems everyone in town was there. The homes were small and close together so we were very effecient. Layla ran from home to home, yelling trick or treat, talking to the elderly and to other children. She was super excited to see a bunch of kids from her preschool and even her skating instructor. Layla got a lot of praise for her costume, especially from the elderly who were probably the only ones to recognize who she was dressed as. To be quite honest, I had never heard of Carmen Miranda, I thought it was just a generic flamenco dancer costume. Layla was always willing to give a dance for people who requested it before they would give her candy.

One house they gave Layla a can of coke in her bag! Layla asked what they put in and Greg replied by saying a soda, hoping she wouldn't equate soda with pop. It didn't work and Layla continued to tell this lady who must have been 85 yrs old that soda is very unhealthy. The lady laughed as did someone else in the next room of the house. Greg made a joke about it and off we went. It's not as if anything in that bag was healthy but she has a thing about pop. We also had to correct her when she thought it appropriate to point out how old somebody was.

After 90 minutes of trick or treating we headed over to the Oliver Community Hall for Scareview '08. They had scary stories, haunted house, and plenty of games and candy for the kids. Layla and Greg went in the haunted house against my advice but they enjoyed it, she was definately scared but she loved it.

We are really adjusting well to small town living. It is so fun to attend community events and Layla loves to bump into people she knows. This was the best Halloween Greg and I have ever had. We realize Layla won't always want to trick or treat with us and we enjoy every moment that she lets her goofy parents spend time with her.

  3. Baron was bundled up in his car seat the entire night so a costume would have been wasted on him.
